The seamless delivery of healthcare services does not depend solely on the actual providers; the doctors and nurses. The healthcare sector also requires the service of other professionals who look into the administration and management functions and ensure that every customer (patients and their families) goes home satisfied. Medical assistants are such professionals who serve as a vital cog between the patients and the primary healthcare providers in any hospital or clinic. As a medical assistant you will need to perform key tasks to keep the offices of physicians running with precision. These may be both administrative and clinical tasks and the magnitude of responsibility will of course vary according to the setting where you work. In smaller settings such as clinics you will be expected to multi-task and perform a host of administrative as well as clinical duties. In larger settings such as hospitals, which have enough staff to take care of the clinical duties, your focus will be on specializing in an area of hospital administration under department heads.
But for being eligible to perform these duties, you need to get medical assistant training. The good news is that there are no specific educational requirements for getting enrolled into a training program and so you can join in after completing high school. Most of these programs are 1-2 years in duration.
Many vocational schools, postsecondary colleges, and junior colleges offer this training. You are taught to perform a variety of tasks, from measuring vital signs to record keeping and patient handling. Both classroom and practical training hours are dedicated to teaching you:
- Various basic clinical procedures such as first aid, CPR etc
- Handling records, updating databases, billing and coding and also other useful office practices.
Other than this medical assistant training programs also teach you the basics of human anatomy, pharmacology and physiology. You learn how to handle patients tactfully so that they prefer to visit your clinic or hospital as opposed to others. Handling patient relations is particularly important when you work in a small setting and individual attention must be given to all.
Once the training period is over and you clear the exam, you are awarded a medical assistant certificate. This certificate is not essential, but will give you an edge over others who have no formal training, while looking for a job. So, medical assistant training is indeed a good idea!
