Medical emergencies come without warning and they can lead to sudden and traumatic loss of life. Road accidents, fires, terrorist attacks and many other situations call for expert medical professionals to minimize the loss of life by administering basic medical aid and transporting survivors to the nearest medical facility. If you want to be one of those life saving medical personnel, you have to undergo one of the emergency medical training programs. Only then can you become an emergency medical technician (EMT) or a paramedic.
The most important thing about this training is that it will prepare you for the rather challenging role you will be expected to fulfill as a paramedic. An EMT is supposed to be the first medical help to arrive at the scene of disaster. So, this training is not for you unless you thrive on challenges and like to work with minimal margins for error.
Emergency medical training makes you eligible for certification which is mandatory, no matter which part of the country you plan to work in. during the training period you will undergo both classroom and practical coaching on various aspects of emergency medical services. The practical part will require you to work in various healthcare settings such as hospitals and clinics and also inside ambulances.
Of course, during training you will be taught various disaster management skills along with techniques which will enable you to save people's lives. You will learn how to:
- Stop bleeding so that victims do not die on their way to hospital
- Move critically injured people onto stretchers and into ambulances.
- Other techniques of reviving people whose vitals signs keep fading. But perhaps more importantly, an emergency medical training program will teach you how to:
- Take key decisions at the spur of the moment, based on logical though rather than instinct.
- Keep your focus and intensity intact for every shift that you work.
And this will be very important in the long run, because you may have to work shifts of 24 hours or more at a stretch. During the course of the training you will also learn how to take care of yourself and keep fit in order to perform your duties properly.
The duration and intensity of training will depend on the type of certification you are pursuing. Advanced certificates in emergency medical certificates will require longer emergency medical training than most other situations. But once you complete the training, you will be able to save many lives, all in a days work!
